The Wonder by Emma Donoghue

“There was something very different about – very wrong with – Anna O’Donnell”

What a perfectly accurate title for this gothic tale. Anna, an 11-year-old girl who will not eat, truly is a wonder. Anna claims to have not eaten in 4 months, surviving on only ‘manna’ from heaven. A skeptical English nurse (Lib) and a Catholic nun are brought in to watch this ‘miracle girl’ on alternating shifts. The world is mesmerized by Anna, and Lib seems to be one of the only non-believers.

I wasn’t sure if this would be the book for me. However, because of the incredibly high reviews and the author (I loved ROOM), I decided to give it a shot, and I’m so glad I did. This book may not be for everyone as it moves at a fairly slow pace, but by halfway through, I was fully invested.

The Wonder intertwines history, faith, mystery and loyalty – many wonderful components that contributed to the richness of this story.
